2008 LOM/MS Gala

National Post - Afterhours; Galas, Fundraisers, Movers & Shakers - December 2008

For the 15th year, Loewen, Ondaatje, McCutcheon was thrilled to host one of Bay Street’s most highly-anticipated parties. Held this year on October 30th at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, the annual LOM Gala and Auction to benefit Multiple Sclerosis was again a resounding success, gathering Bay Street’s finest united in the common goal to end MS.

This year’s theme was 15 Minutes of Fame with all the attendant thrills and glamour of a Red Carpet Award Ceremony. A sold-out Regency Ballroom hosted more than 400 guests resplendent in their best designer gowns and formal tuxedos. Each attendee was given an honorary medallion for their support of this worthy cause and commemorated their evening with photo op in front of a red velvet roped backdrop displaying a collage of Company supporter logos.

This yearly event continues to celebrate the life and times of Bruce Grinton, an LOM trader whose battle with MS ended too soon, some 9 years ago.

Today, thanks to the generous support of corporations and small businesses alike, the cause is strongly supported through product donation and prizes for our silent and live auctions.

Some of the big-ticket auction items included: a behind the scenes look at a taping of "What A Catch!" to be filmed at a remote and exotic destination, a diamond necklace with matching diamond hoop earrings, corporate suites to enjoy the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Raptors games, a David Brown BBQ for 50, a Maserati for a weekend and a private jet for eight people. One could buy a "Claim to Fame" card for $25, $50, $100, $150 or $200 to win prizes worth up to $700. These included gift certificates to fabulous restaurants and resorts; fitness classes and personal training; relaxing spa days and much, much more.

Guest speakers for the evening were Dr. Brenda Banwell, Director of the Pediatric MS Clinic at The Hospital for Sick Children and Dr. Paul O'Connor, Director of the MS Clinic at St. Michael's Hospital, and Professor of Medicine (Neurology) at the University of Toronto. Also, Mr. Robert Cowley of Waddington's Auctioneers/ Appraisers was the Auctioneer for the lightning quick bidding round.
During a delicious dinner, guests were serenaded by opera soprano vocalist, Ms. Mirela Tafaj. After dinner a packed dance floor rocked to the stellar sounds of the Anita Rossi Band.

The winners of the "Exceptional Champion" Awards were announced during the award ceremony. They were honoured for their exceptional support of the LOM MS Gala over the years. The winners are:
